چکیده

Struvite precipitation proved to be an effective method of ammonia removal from the landfill leachate from two separate sources. Batch tests for precipitating struvite yielded several different chemical combinations that were effective at removing ammonia from leachate. The struvite precipitate samples were quite heterogeneous in composition, containing a mixture of short and thick crystals, elongated rectangular crystals, and spherical needle-like crystals and elemental analysis indicated that there were other minerals present (Struvite was identified using X-ray diffraction). Precipitates from landfill leachate resulted in larger plants (Kale and Corn) and greater plant yield than controls, but they underperformed commercial fertilizer. When the economics of a struvite precipitating pretreatment are analyzed, it seems that employing such a process is not currently justifiable. The current prices paid for conventional fertilizers are hundreds of times less than the price needed to break even on struvite production making struvite pretreatment for landfill leachate a non-viable option at present.

MAP precipitation from landfill leachate and seawater bittern waste.

The leachates generated at Hong Kong landfill sites contain high strength of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) over 3,000 mg l(-1) and are generally inhibitive to most biological treatment processes. To remove the NH4+-N from the landfill leachates and also recover the nitrogen as a struvite fertilizer, a lab-scale study was performed to investigate the feasibility of NH4+-N removal and struvite cryst...

Landfill site selection for municipal solid waste with combining SWARA technique and COPRAS method using GIS (Case study: Kermanshah, Iran)

The selection of municipal solid waste landfills is significant because it controls environmental pollution and its problems. Since site selection is a time-consuming and multifaceted process involving various socio-economic and environmental parameters, it requires expert opinion, extensive information resources, and multi-criteria methods. Therefore, this study was carried out for landfill si...

Treatment of mature landfill leachate by chemical precipitation and Fenton advanced oxidation process

Background: Mature landfill leachate is a complicated mixture which is resistant to biological treatment processes. The treatment of mature landfill leachate by struvite precipitation and Fenton oxidation was the main objective of the current research. Methods: Struvite with the phosphate/ammonia/magnesium molar ratio of 1/1/1.05 was considered during all experiments. Five initial pHs of 3, 4,...

Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Site Selection using Analytical Hierarchy Process Method and Geographic Information System in Abadan, Iran

Background and purpose: An appropriate solid waste (SW) disposal has been a major problem in municipal environment. The use of landfills is the most economical and environmentally acceptable method for the disposal of SWs all over the world. However, landfill leachate can cause environmental issues such as soil and ground water pollution. So, finding suitable land fill site is one of the mo...
